The Virginia Beach Whales eked out a 3-2 win versus the Toledo Saboteurs at Toledo Backyard Park. Nobody did more than pitcher Liu-liang Lei. He was terrific. William Pettersen, now 3-0, picked up the win in relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 2.2 innings. Bill Gould recorded the save, his 6th.
Virginia Beach used the timely hitting of Gregory Jones to capture the win. The first baseman socked a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Whales ahead, 3-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a big one.
Toledo manager Will Thomas said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
Virginia Beach is now 20-17.
