The St. Petersburg Thunder overcame a good performance by Yakima catcher Javier Cruz to knock off Yakima, 6-5, at Hops Park. Cruz was 4-4 with 4 singles. St. Petersburg reliever Rick Lawson got the win, raising his record to 2-2. Ken Hayes was tagged with the loss. The 'W' lifts St. Petersburg's record to 27-28.

The result might have been different, had it not been for Travis Gilliam, the St. Petersburg designated hitter. Gilliam had a run-scoring single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Thunder ahead, 6-5. For the game, Gilliam had 1 double and 2 singles in 5 at-bats.

"It wasn't our best performance," said Gilliam, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."
