Monsters Prevail, 1-0, Over Syracuse

The Monongahela Monsters had to overcome a fine effort from Syracuse pitcher Steve Gourin to grab a narrow 1-0 win at Timber Hawks Ballpark. Gourin went 7 innings and allowed 1 run. Joel Baxter came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 3.2 innings. His record now stands at 1-2. Luis Boll nailed down his 2nd save.
In the bottom of the sixth, Monongahela first baseman Martín Flores hit a two-strike slider to right field for a solo home run. It put the Monsters up, 1-0.
"Winning makes the heart grow fonder -- for more winning," said Flores, cracking a smile.
Syracuse drops to 5-7.
