Opening day festivities have begun throughout the league. Fans of the Virginia Beach Whales were eager to watch Daryl Benstead square off against Anastasio Ayala of the visiting Marquette Miners. In the end, the Whales won the game, 9-1, with Daryl Benstead leading the way. In 5.1 innings, Benstead surrendered 4 hits, while striking out 5 and walking 4. He allowed 1 run.

In the bottom of the second, Rick McCarthy hit a 2-run double. The 1st double of the season for the Virginia Beach second baseman put the Whales on top, 2-1.

"I felt we were ready to go," said Virginia Beach manager Domingo García. "Our pregame was pretty good."
