Hughes Excels, But Screaming Eagles Win
The Mercer Island Screaming Eagles overcame a good performance by Ft. Polk South designated hitter Virgil Hughes to knock off Ft. Polk South, 8-6, at Mercer Island Grounds. Hughes was 2-2 with a home run and 2 walks, while scoring 2 and driving in 3. Dan Smith got credit for the win, improving to 2-0. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 4.1 innings. The Screaming Eagles raised their record to 45-29.

Mercer Island took a 8-6 lead on Rocky Moran's 5th home run of the season. The 2-run home run came off Ft. Polk South pitcher Bartolo Márquez in the bottom of the eighth.

"The name of the game is scoring runs," Moran said. "We did a good job of that today."
