A good performance from catcher Luis Reyes helped the Virginia Beach Whales defeat the Athletic Club KC Academy, 2-1. Reyes went 1 for 2 with a walk for the Whales. Matt Cornett earned the win after being called from the bullpen. The left-hander allowed no runs on no hits in 3.2 innings. He upped his record to 3-0. Arlen Mata, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 3rd save.
The critical at-bat for Virginia Beach came in the top of the ninth inning. With one out, Reyes hit a sacrifice fly, putting Virginia Beach up, 2-1.
"I'll probably toss and turn tonight," Athletic Club KC Academy manager Sherwood Baker said following the tough loss.
The loss makes Athletic Club KC Academy 12-7.
