Field of the Rawhides was the site of the home opener for the Squirrel Hill Pierogis. The contest featured a prime matchup between Ethan Gilbert of the visiting Bethesda Atoms and Eugene Kelly of the Pierogis. The final score was 3-1, the Atoms getting the win. Ethan Gilbert turned in the best performance. Gilbert picked up the win for Bethesda, going 5.1 innings. He gave up 1 run on 6 hits. He now sports a record of 1-0.
In the top of the sixth, Bethesda right fielder Byron Shadix put his team on top. With two out and a runner on 1st, he hit his 1st home run of the year. Squirrel Hill pitcher Eugene Kelly served it up. Just like that, the Atoms were ahead, 2-1.
"Getting ahead of the hitters was the key," said Gilbert.
