The Gulf Coast Turbeaus got a superb performance from pitcher Randy Smith, but the Asheville Highlanders still won the game, 4-3. Smith threw 6.1 innings of 1-hit ball. Asheville reliever Tom Young picked up the win, raising his record to 1-0. Luis Valdés was tagged with the loss. The save went to Kamiel Wabeke, number 20 for him.
Asheville used the clutch hitting of Yong-oon P'i to snag the win. The first baseman drilled a 3-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Highlanders ahead, 4-3. It was his lone hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a crucial one.
"We did enough to win," said P'i.
With the win, Asheville raised its record to 39-36.
