Highlanders Beat Virginia Beach, 4-3
|
The Asheville Highlanders did just enough to sneak past the Virginia Beach Whales, 4-3, at Asheville Park. Asheville pitcher Micheal Smith, in particular, had a standout performance. Asheville reliever Ramón Rodríguez picked up the win, upping his record to 4-4. Bill Turner shouldered the loss. Asheville is 5th in the Silver AA with a record of 35-33.
The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the ninth inning, when Asheville shortstop Wendell Palmer, facing Calvin Blackburn, had a run-scoring walk. It gave the Highlanders the 4-3 win.
After the game, Asheville manager William Franklin applauded the team's effort. "They busted their humps out there," he said.
