Both teams had their opportunities, but in the end, the Laredo Hawks got the win.
The Laredo Hawks defeated the Smoky Mountain Hobeaus, 4-2, in USSL Single A action at Hawks Field, with Laredo pitcher Tadamichi Chikafuji named player of the game. Laredo reliever Ralph Jones was the winner. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was Ben Hankins. De'Coldest Crawford closed the game out for Laredo, earning his 16th save.
Had Gregory Jones not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 3rd, Jones hit a 2-run triple. That made the score 4-2, in favor of the Hawks.
"If I go out there and help the team win, that's all you can do," said Chikafuji.
The Hawks improved to 37-41.
