The Squirrel Hill Pierogis topped the Tacoma Fur Traders, 3-1, in USSL Double A action at Field of the Rawhides. The player of the game was Squirrel Hill pitcher and Koror, Palau native Mutu Kirra. Squirrel Hill reliever Jerry Reid picked up the win, upping his record to 4-3. Theodosio Brederode shouldered the loss. Todd Dean was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 1 of 1 save opportunities.
The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Martín Flores came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Tacoma pitcher Theodosio Brederode, he hit a 1-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Squirrel Hill on top, 2-1.
"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Squirrel Hill manager Randy Stevens. "It's usually not just one thing."
After today's action, Squirrel Hill sits at 43-57, while Tacoma falls to 46-54.
