McCarty Goes Wild, But Nationals Win
|
Fans at Nationals Park were not deterred by the threat of rain. They came to see their hometown Ottawa Nationals take on the Squirrel Hill Pierogis.
The Squirrel Hill Pierogis got a sterling performance from left fielder Ryan McCarty, but the Nationals still prevailed, 9-6. McCarty was named the player of the game in a losing cause. He was 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 singles. He scored 3 runs and drove in 2. Mark Wells got the win, improving to 5-6. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 10 hits and 6 runs, while striking out 2 and walking 1. Earning his 11th save for Ottawa was Sam Martínez.
The Pierogis had been locked in a 5-5 tie with the Nationals going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 24-year old left fielder Greg Rogers came to the plate. Rogers hit a grand slam home run on a 2-2 fastball from Squirrel Hill hurler Wesley Mason. It was Rogers's 6th home run of the year.
"Win or lose, we pick each other up in this clubhouse," Rogers told the Ottawa Today.
The win puts the Nationals at 41-33, while the Pierogis drop to 32-42.
