The Virginia Beach Whales got a stellar performance from pitcher Daryl Benstead, who handcuffed the Gulf Coast offense en route to a 3-2 win at Virginia Beach Grounds. Virginia Beach goes to 40-27. The win puts them 2½ games up in their division.

Had Todd Walker not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 3rd, Walker hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Whales.

"If you want to be considered a good team, these are the kind of games you have to win," said Virginia Beach manager Bernie Drake.
