Whales Sink Nationals, 9-5
|
The Virginia Beach Whales knocked off the Ottawa Nationals, 9-5, at Nationals Park. Todd Walker, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason Virginia Beach won. The designated hitter was 1-2 with a home run and 3 walks, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2. Virginia Beach reliever Clyde Sparks got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Jim Maxwell was tagged with the loss. Patrick Le Gall earned the save for Virginia Beach, his 1st.
Virginia Beach used the timely hitting of Victor Jensen to capture the win. The second baseman socked a run-scoring double in the top of the seventh inning to put the Whales ahead, 5-4. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was an important one.
"We came out aggressive," said Whales manager Bernie Drake. "We came out swinging the bats."
With the win, Virginia Beach improves its record to 3-4.
