Portland pitcher Robert Smalls gave the Battery all they could handle, but in the end, Charleston left Charleston Armory with a 5-4 win. Smalls allowed 1 earned run on 6 hits over 5.1 innings. The Evergreens, now 12-8, continue their sluggish start.

In the bottom of the 8th, third baseman Melvin Thomas gave Charleston the lead when he hit a 2-run double. The Battery had been trailing 4-3, but the two-out double off Portland pitcher Seong-hyeon Yi changed that -- and Charleston went on to win.

"I'm proud of the way our guys played today to come out with this win," Thomas told the Charleston Daily.
