Road Win Lifts Virginia Beach to 1-0 Lead in R1

Their bats were silent and Virginia Beach had a rookie on the mound. No problem.
On a day when the Whales struggled to string together much offense, the club got a big boost from 25-year-old starter Remco Mansvelt. The left-hander quieted the Atlantic City Sonics at Sonics Ballpark to help Virginia Beach take the 2-1 decision and seize a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 SL AA Championship.
Mansvelt was effective for Virginia Beach, seldom allowing the Sonics to square up a pitch. The left-hander tossed 88 pitches over 8 innings. He limited Atlantic City to just 1 run on 3 hits.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Virginia Beach manager Bernie Drake said.
The next game is scheduled for tomorrow at Sonics Ballpark. Slated to start are Clyde Sparks for Virginia Beach and Calle Lagerkvist for Atlantic City.
