Almost There: Portland On Cusp of R1 Triumph After 3-0 Win

Game was big. So was Robert Smalls.
The Portland starter rose to the occasion at Lang Park today, earning player of the game honors after leading the Evergreens to a crucial 3-0 victory over the San Mateo Dirty Reds. Smalls threw 6 innings of shutout ball as the Evergreens won on the road to seize a - lead in the best-of- Round 1.
Portland used the timely hitting of Vicente Gomillion to seize the win. The left fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the fourth inning to put the Evergreens on top, 2-0. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"It's a gut punch," Dirty Reds manager Dean Ashley said, "to get here and find ourselves down - in the blink of an eye."
