The Torch grabbed a win, 5-4, at Torch Field, overcoming a fine effort from Grim pitcher Leo Cassidy. Cassidy went 6.1 innings and allowed 3 earned runs. Mancelona reliever Luis Rodríguez picked up the win to move to 1-1. Bill Miller suffered the loss. The 7th-place Torch now have a win-loss record of 40-43.
A critical at-bat came in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Torch sent 20-year-old center fielder Carlos Vélez to the plate with a runner on 3rd. The youngster shook off the pressure and hit a sacrifice fly, to put Mancelona on top, 5-4.
"We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Vélez.
