The Virginia Beach Whales got a magnificent effort from pitcher Daryl Benstead, who kept Toledo hitters in check en route to a 2-1 Whales win at Toledo Backyard Park. Virginia Beach reliever Martin Rumbolt picked up the win, upping his record to 7-3. Jesús Crisotomo shouldered the loss. Virginia Beach is now 58-38, Toledo 56-40.

Virginia Beach used the timely hitting of Aatos Salmi to seize the win. The second baseman stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put the Whales on top, 1-0. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"There are no moral victories," said losing manager Will Thomas.
