The Richland Rails got a strong performance from pitcher Gary Podell, who stymied the Asheville offense en route to a 3-1 win at Rails Ballpark. Podell, the winner, moves to 9-2. He threw 6 innings of 2-hit ball, while fanning 7 and giving up 1 walk. Artie Bates was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 18 of 19 save opportunities.
The Highlanders had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Rails going into the bottom of the fourth inning. That changed quickly when the 26-year old shortstop Javier Botín came to the plate. Botín hit a run-scoring single on a 0-1 curveball from Asheville hurler Vicente Molina. It was Botín's 47th hit of the year.
"At the end of the day, it's always about your starting pitcher," said Richland skipper Fernando Mendoza.
Asheville's current losing streak is now 4 games.
