Plymouth right-hander Sanford Shades made an effective start against the Syracuse Starks at Plymouth Quarry, leading his team to a 7-4 win. The winning pitcher was Shades, now 1-0. He tossed 8.1 innings of 4-hit ball, while walking 1 and fanning 6. Josh Brennan closed it out for his 1st save.

The Starks had been locked in a 2-2 tie with the Rocks going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 24-year old catcher Pedro Marrero came to the plate. Marrero hit a 2-run double on a full count fastball from Syracuse hurler Glenn Underwood. It was Marrero's 1st double of the year.

"Nervous? No," said Marrero. "It was my time to shine."

The loss drops Syracuse to 1-4.
