Sonics Slip Past Virginia Beach, 4-3
|
Crowds lined up early in front of Sonics Ballpark, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2042 USSL Double A season. On the mound was Daryl Benstead for the visiting Virginia Beach Whales and Jay Newton for the hometown Atlantic City Sonics. In a spirited contest, the Sonics pulled out the win, defeating the Whales by the score of 4-3. Earning player of the game honors was Daryl Benstead.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Zhong-yan Zhang came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Virginia Beach pitcher António Arrojo, he hit a 2-2 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Atlantic City on top, 4-3.
In postgame comments to the Atlantic City Today, Zhang said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
