Panama City beat Pittsburgh at Pittsburgh Grounds, eking out a 9-8 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher Davis Sawyer, who earned player of the game honors. In 7.1 innings, Sawyer surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 1 and walking 2. He allowed 1 run. Gunner Cross closed the door for Panama City, picking up his 4th save of the year.
The outcome might have been different for Panama City, had it not been for Blaze Alexander, the former first round draft pick . Alexander stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put Panama City up, 3-1. For the game, he was 2 for 5, including 1 double and 1 single.
"It was offense that won us the game," said winning manager Brian Talamante.
The loss drops Pittsburgh to 8-6.
