Rollins, Northern Virginia Start Round 1 Strong with Home Win

The Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids are one game away from a sweep after a 5-2 win over the visiting Echo Park Lakers at Atlantica today. Rainbow Mermaids right-hander Nick Rollins was named player of the game after a strong outing in which he came in in relief and pitched to 26 batters . Northern Virginia now holds a - advantage in the best-of- Round 1.
The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Xiao-yong Huang came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Echo Park pitcher Lance Barber, he hit a 2-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Northern Virginia on top, 3-2.
"It's hard to overstate how much this mattered to us, especially in a short series," Northern Virginia manager David Lister said.
