Airmen Come Back Late to Clip River Rats
|
The Airmen had to overcome a fine effort from Columbia pitcher Ryan Long to grab a narrow 4-2 win at Columbia Stadium. Long went 6.1 innings and allowed 1 earned run. Alameda goes to 23-18, Columbia to 20-21.
A critical at-bat came in the top of the ninth inning when the Airmen sent 22-year-old catcher Reynold Jongenelen to the plate with the bases loaded. The youngster shook off the pressure and drew a walk, driving in 1 run, to put Alameda on top, 4-2.
After the game, Alameda manager Juan Salinas applauded the team's effort. "They busted their tails out there," he said.
