Atoms Come Up Short at Billings
|
The Bethesda Atoms got a superb performance from first baseman Juan Vázquez. Still, it wasn't enough to beat Billings. The Polar Bears won the game, 8-7. In spite of the loss, Vázquez was named the player of the game. He was 3-3 with 3 singles and a walk. Eliseo Fontirroig picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 5-0. Kang-keun Yong was tagged with the loss. Arturo Cuellar closed it out for his 12th save.
Augusto Reyes had a big bases-clearing double for the Polar Bears in the bottom of the sixth inning. With Billings trailing 7-5 and the bases loaded, he got a changeup from Kang-keun Yong and stroked the double to center. It was his 8th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Polar Bears ahead, 8-7.
"We maximized our offense today," said Billings skipper Ramón Rodríguez. "That makes everyone's life easier."
Billings is now 35-41, Bethesda 42-34.
