Asheville Topples Providence, 6-3
|
The Asheville Highlanders knocked off the Providence Pilgrims, 6-3, at Asheville Park. Colton Pennington, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason Asheville won. The first baseman went 2-4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. The win was Vincent Hubbard's in relief. His record improves to 2-1. Ángel Ibarra took the loss for Providence. Jeffery Johnston sewed up the save, his 14th.
A crucial at-bat came with a runner on 1st and no one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. That's when designated hitter Dean Barthorpe, who is tied for 4th in the 3AA in home runs with 11, hit a single. The Highlanders went on to win.
"We took advantage of our opportunities," Barthorpe told the Asheville Bulletin. "It's as simple as that."
The Highlanders raised their record to 35-20.
