Highlanders Continue Hot Start to Season With Win
Despite a fine performance by third baseman Ron Carlisle, the Squirrel Hill Pierogis suffered a 6-5 loss to the Asheville Highlanders. Carlisle was 2 for 4 with a home run, while scoring 2 times and driving in 3. Jeffery Johnston earned the save, his 6th. The Highlanders, now 8-4, have played some good baseball in the early going.

The result might have been different for Asheville, had it not been for José Portiz. The designated hitter produced a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the first inning to put the Highlanders ahead, 2-0. For the game, Portiz had 1 double and 1 single in 3 at-bats.

"I like the grit of this ballclub," Portiz said.
