Mockingbirds Stumble, Lose to Evergreens
|
The Portland Evergreens topped the Mississippi Mockingbirds, 13-1, with youngster Fernando Soto playing a key role. Soto was 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 singles, while scoring 3 runs for the Evergreens in the win. Gerald Orlebar, who went 6 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 1 run on 3 hits, while walking 0 and striking out 4. His record now stands at 5-3. The Evergreens now own a record of 24-28.
The Evergreens grabbed the lead in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Vicente Gomillion, the 31st overall pick in the 2039 draft, hit a 3-run home run off Denie Coppens, putting Portland in front, 13-1. For Gomillion, it was his 6th home run of the season.
"We took it on the chin today," said losing manager Beau Carsten.
