Despite a fine performance by third baseman Pat Geldart, the Virginia Beach Whales suffered a 6-5 loss to the Atlantic City Sonics. Geldart was 2-4 with a home run, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. Pepe Fontirroig got credit for the win, improving to 1-0. He allowed no runs on no hits in 0.1 innings. Thomas Sangrey earned the save for Atlantic City, his 1st of the year.

Had August Force not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Force hit a run-scoring double. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Sonics.

"Say want you want about this team, they play nine innings hard," said Atlantic City manager Juan López.

The Sonics raised their record to 2-0.
