Blimps, Sonics Play 11 to Settle Game 1, Akron Now Leads Series 1-0
|
The Akron Blimps started the SL AA Championship in dramatic fashion today, stealing Game 1 from the Atlantic City Sonics in a walk-off in the 11th inning. Akron took the 3-2 win thanks in large part to a good day from starter Lance Mascola. The right-hander threw 7 innings of 5-hit ball in the win, which gave the Blimps a 1-0 lead to start the best-of-5 series.
The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Mike Fisher came to bat in the bottom of the 11th. Facing Atlantic City pitcher Phil Britt, he hit a 1-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Akron on top, 3-2.
"Our guys just had that look of determination," said winning manager Jared Gilbert.
The next game is scheduled for tomorrow at Goodyear Hanger Dome in Akron. Slated to start are Gaberiela Tatafu for the Atlantic City Sonics and Henry Terry for the the Akron Blimps.
