Day, Blaze Take Dramatic Game 5 for 3-2 Series Lead
|
The South Beach Blaze went into extra innings against the Cut Off Crawdads but ultimately moved to within one game of the Round 2 today. The Blaze downed the Crawdads in a 16-inning walk-off at The Ballpark on the Beach by a final score of 7-6. South Beach left-hander Phil Day was named player of the game after a solid outing in which he threw 6 innings of 5-hit ball. The win gives the Blaze a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-5 PL A Championship.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Juan Lugo came to bat in the bottom of the 16th. Facing Cut Off pitcher Lonnie Rhodes, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting South Beach on top, 7-6.
Crawdads manager Michael Garrett did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the PL A Championship."
