Pilgrims Stick Rails with 11-7 Loss
|
The Providence Pilgrims defeated the Richland Rails, 11-7. Earning player of the game honors was third baseman Ángel Saelices, who went 2-4 with 2 home runs and a walk. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. Jared Martínez, who went 6.2 innings, was the winning pitcher. He was charged with 5 runs on 8 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 2. His record now stands at 8-11. Umebayashi Naofumi picked up the save for Providence, his 16th of the year.
The result might have been different for Providence, had it not been for Jesse McCoy, the former first round draft pick . McCoy stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the second inning to put Providence up, 2-1. For the game, he had 1 double and 2 singles in 5 at-bats.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," McCoy told a Providence Gazette reporter. "Sometimes we need just to relax."
The second-place Rails have dropped 4 straight games.
