Thrilling Walk-Off Win for Blue Sox
|
Irving beat Biloxi at Blue Sox Ballpark, eking out a 3-2 win. The win was due in large part to pitcher Joe Holland, who earned player of the game honors. Irving reliever Biff Pocoroba picked up the win, upping his record to 1-1. Bill Glenn took the loss. Things have gone south in a hurry for the defending champion Blue Sox, who notched only their 1st win in 10 games.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Rick Newell came to bat in the bottom of the tenth. Facing Biloxi pitcher Bill Glenn, he hit a 3-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Irving on top, 3-2.
"We'll savor this win," Newell told the Irving Times, "then get ready for the next game."
