Syracuse Storm manager Theodore Johnston knew it was a gamble to give the start to a rookie. It was a good gamble to take.

Pitching in front of a hostile crowd, 23-year-old right-hander Greg Poe silenced the host Caldwell Chiefs at Pipers Ballpark today. The Storm shut out the Chiefs by a final score of 3-0, to give the Storm a 3-2 advantage in the best-of-5 SL A Championship.

Poe earned the win, going 9 strong innings for Syracuse. The native of Fayetteville, North Carolina allowed just 2 hits, while striking out 7. Caldwell hitters did next to nothing against the right-hander.

"At least it was over quickly," Chiefs manager Hugh Harris said. "We'll just have to try our luck again."
