Generals Mow Down River Rats, 9-4
|
The Washington Generals beat the Columbia River Rats, 9-4, at Columbia Stadium. The win was largely due to the efforts of left fielder Bari bin Sayyid, who captured player of the game honors. He was 4 for 4 with 4 singles and was hit by a pitch. He scored 2 runs. Pie-qi Gao earned the win for Washington. He lasted 7.1 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 10 hits, while striking out 3. With the win, he raised his record to 1-3. Columbia is still trying to get off the schneid, having lost 7 in a row.
Washington used the clutch hitting of Jaako Haavisto to capture the win. The center fielder drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the first inning to put the Generals ahead, 2-0. It was his only hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a big one.
Haavisto told the Washington Citizen: "Win or lose, I don't want to see our team outhustled."
