Rainbow Mermaids Lose to BC in Walk Off
|
The Philadelphia 1776 BC did just enough to secure a 3-2 victory over the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids at Ben Franklin Memorial Coliseum. Nobody did more than pitcher Gilberto Pontojá, who captured player of the game honors. Blair Wright got credit for the win, improving to 2-5. He allowed no runs on 2 hits in 2 innings. Even with the win, the BC have a dismal 22-45 record.
The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Eddie Sachs came to bat in the bottom of the 11th. Facing Northern Virginia pitcher Yoriyoshi Sugimoto, he hit a full count cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Philadelphia 1776 on top, 3-2.
"Great to get the crowd on its feet," Pontojá said.
