BC Bang Out 8-4 Win Versus Memphis
|
Houston played host to Memphis at the friendly confines of Houston Park.
The Houston BC defeated the Memphis Redbirds, 8-4. Earning player of the game honors was right fielder Rich Watkins, who was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Patrick Ibáñez got the win, improving to 9-7. He pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 5 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 6 and walking 2.
The Redbirds had been locked in a 3-3 tie with the BC going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 22-year old center fielder Armando Viña came to the plate. Viña hit a 2-run double on a 0-2 changeup from Memphis hurler Gertjan van Hulst. It was Viña's 18th double of the year.
"Baseball is about momentum," said Watkins, "and we feel we've got it in our favor after that win."
The 6th-place BC now have a win-loss record of 50-49.
