Almost There: Portland On Cusp of R2039 Triumph After 4-2 Win
|
The Portland Evergreens moved to within one game of the Round 2040 today, downing the visiting Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids at Evergreen Park by a score of 4-2. Evergreens right-hander Eric Matson was named player of the game after a strong outing in which he threw 6 innings of 3-hit ball. The win gives the Evergreens a - advantage in the best-of- Round 2039.
Had Bastiaan Pieterse not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Pieterse hit a 2-run single. That made the score 4-2, in favor of the Evergreens.
Northern Virginia manager David Lister said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
The next game is scheduled for Sunday. The scheduled starters for the game are Cristián Moreno for the Portland Evergreens and Eddie Kop for the the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids.
