Extra-Inning Walk-Off Win for Storm

The Tennessee Smokies went down to defeat to Rubén López and his Syracuse teammates. The final score was 2-1 in favor of the Storm. Syracuse reliever Ben Gillespie was the winner. His record is now 2-0. The losing pitcher was Félix Fernández. The Storm move to 42-39 with the win, while the Smokies drop to 32-49.
The game was at a stalemate until left fielder Rick Newell came to bat in the bottom of the tenth. Facing Tennessee pitcher Félix Fernández, he hit a 0-1 slider for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Syracuse on top, 2-1.
"I tell our guys all the time, 'Every pitch is the right pitch if you put it in the right place, you believe in it and have conviction,'" Syracuse manager Theodore Johnston said.
