Rainbow Mermaids Raise Rally Flag, Beat Vancouver, 6-5
|
The Vancouver Grey Wolves got a superb performance from pitcher Kenny Aarnoutse, but the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids still won the game, 6-5. Aarnoutse was named the player of the game despite the loss. He threw 6 innings of 3-hit ball. Northern Virginia reliever Tom King picked up the win, upping his record to 1-3. Sjaak Bonne shouldered the loss. Brewster Warble converted his 24th save in 25 tries.
Had Lupo Cotto not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and the bases loaded, Cotto hit a 2-run single. That made the score 6-5, in favor of the Rainbow Mermaids.
"We've got a great group of guys," Cotto said, "and we're having fun right now."
Northern Virginia goes to 64-29. The win puts them 6½ games up in their division.
