Portland Evergreens starter Robert Smalls was in fine form against the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids at Atlantica, leading his team to a 5-2 win. In 7 innings, Smalls surrendered 4 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 2. He allowed 2 runs. The Evergreens own a robust 44-25 mark.

It could have been a different outcome for Portland, had it not been for Willie McGirt, the former first round draft pick . McGirt contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning to put Portland up, 2-0.
