Youth Best Fighting Imps in Pitching Duel
|
The Phoenix Hotspur Youth eked out a 2-1 win versus the Ithaca Fighting Imps at Grenadiers Ballpark. Nobody did more than pitcher Derek Jones, who captured player of the game honors. Jones went 7 innings to notch the win. He scattered 6 hits, walked 1, and struck out 4. His record improves to 2-0. Sean Neely earned his 8th save in 9 tries.
Had Frank Ray not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the seventh, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Ray hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Youth.
"We made a couple of mistakes," said Ithaca skipper Michael Orchard, "and it cost us."
The losing skid has reached 7 games for Ithaca.
