Rainbow Mermaids Come Back Late to Top Hotspur
|
Phoenix got a terrific performance from pitcher Masahiro Sakei, but it wasn't enough to beat the Northern Virginia Rainbow Mermaids. Northern Virginia won the Atlantica contest, 7-6. Sakei was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball. Yoriyoshi Sugimoto was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 5 of 6 save opportunities. The Rainbow Mermaids have an impressive 45-20 record.
Northern Virginia took a 6-5 lead on Daniel McCoy's 15th double of the season. The run-scoring double, which McCoy hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Phoenix pitcher Ryan Peterson visibly frustrated.
"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," McCoy told the Northern Virginia Today.
