Their bats were silent and Bethesda had a rookie on the mound. No problem.

On a day when the Atoms struggled to string together much offense, the club got a big boost from 25-year-old starter Joshua Neal. The right-hander quieted the Akron Blimps at Atoms Field to help Bethesda take the 3-0 decision and seize a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-5 3L AA Championship.

Bethesda grabbed control in the bottom of the sixth. With two out and a runner on 2nd, Brian Burt delivered a run-scoring single, to make it 1-0 in favor of the Atoms.

"It was a tough night at the plate," said Akron manager Emílio Sáenz.

Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow at Atoms Field in Bethesda. The scheduled starters for the game are Stephen Palmer for the Akron Blimps and Al Gagne for the the Bethesda Atoms.
