When he got to Phoenix, Bernard Hewer was just worrying about staying on the roster. Today, he was starring in the SL R Championship.

The 20-year-old rookie right-hander shut out the host Amarillo Submarinos 1-0 in a remarkable performance at Terriers Ballpark today. With the win, the Hotspur Academy took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 SL R Championship.

Hewer, the Phoenix right-hander, went 7 innings, allowing no earned runs on 5 hits. He collected 9 strikeouts.

Hewer said afterward that his team has grown over the course of the season, adding: "It feels good when a plan comes together."

The next game is scheduled for Friday at Ballpark of Fresno. Slated to start are Artzouig Hreghen for the Amarillo Submarinos and Lúcio Salas for the the Phoenix Hotspur Academy.
