Beavers Come Back Late, Nip Snowpeople
|
Ellesmere Island got a terrific performance from pitcher Hildo van Doorn, but it wasn't enough to beat the Ballard Beavers. Ballard won the Field of the Sunchasers contest, 4-3. van Doorn was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He threw 6 innings allowing 3 runs. Reliever Chris Batt picked up the win. His record improves to 1-1. Pancho Covarrubias took the loss. Tim Gregory got the save, the 1st for him this season.
Had Kelly Johnson not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and a runner on 2nd, Johnson hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 4-3, in favor of the Beavers.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said Ellesmere Island manager Wallace James. "But we decided not to take it."
With the win, Ballard pushes its record to 4-3.
