Miguel Núñez was superb against Syracuse. The left-hander, who is tied for 10th in the SA in innings pitched with 77.1, had a fastball that was virtually unhittable at times. The result was a 4-1 Hawks victory. Laredo reliever Jim Stephenson picked up the win to move to 1-4. Ben Gillespie suffered the loss. The Hawks, at 35-26, lead by one game in their division.

The game was at a stalemate until second baseman Keith Pick came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Syracuse pitcher Ben Gillespie, he hit a full count fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Laredo on top, 2-1.

"Winning the game is always the first objective," Pick said.
