Alameda used a superb performance from starting pitcher Lonnie Slaughter to down the Laredo Hawks, 2-1. Slaughter, the winner, moves to 1-0. He threw 5 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 1 and giving up 3 walks. Batu Khan earned the save for Alameda, his 4th of the year.
The outcome might have been different for Alameda, had it not been for Michael Hughes, the 23-year old center fielder . Hughes stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put Alameda up, 2-0. For the game, he was 2 for 5, including 1 double and 1 single.
"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Hughes. "And not try to do too much."
The win brings the Airmen to 8-11, a soft start for a team that made the playoffs just last season.
