Fans of the Thunder Bay Northern Lions BC who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a Thunder Bay win over the visiting Oakland Oaks, 4-3. Jesús Vidro started for the home team against Jeff Mahl. Jeff Mahl earned the coveted player of the game honors. Thunder Bay reliever Ralph DePalma was the winner. His record is now 1-0. The losing pitcher was Carlos Rodríguez.

The game was at a stalemate until right fielder Jorge Herrera came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Oakland pitcher Carlos Rodríguez, he hit a 1-1 sinker for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Thunder Bay on top, 4-3.

"There's never a lack of effort in our clubhouse. We're willing to do the little things to get the win," Herrera told the Thunder Bay Daily.
